Letâs look at how observe works for a real person, so you can get a better grasp of it to apply it to your life.
Andrew + Observe
Andrew had been running an independent financial planner practice, but also had to take on a part-time job working for FedEx. He met with me to learn to grow his business.
When Andrew talked to me about what was going on with his financial planning, as youâll notice, he seemed to be trying everything and getting nowhere. Essentially he was expending a lot of effort spinning his wheels with nothing coming of it. Youâll notice that he engaged the running-a-race approach when it came to his business.
This is what Andrew explained to me: he was trying to grow his business by increasing marketing, attending more events, and spending additional time and money to increase the reach of his business to new and potential clients. But he was lacking the time, money, and energy to keep this up. He was frustrated about the great amount of effort he was putting in to grow his business and the lack of results. He believed that if he worked hard enough and met the right people, the practice would grow. But he was running out of steam and being pulled apart by the many responsibilities he faced.
As we talked about what he was currently doing, it became evident that he was always looking towards external factors to change and work out. For example, he was trying to build more contact with clients through newsletters and email. And this wasnât going well. When people are trying to find something outside of themselves to fix their circumstances, they believe that the idea will produce results. They end up disconnecting from their passion and what drove them to invest in their work.
Andrew hadnât considered that there was a learning process to be good at communicating with clients and that it would take time and learning. We all tend to get stuck in this type of cycle. We hope the next idea will be the one that makes life easy. Even simple steps take time to implement and master. Reality was that Andrew wanted to change but was only changing the ideas in his mind. He ended up trying out an idea and then quickly moved on to another idea before the original idea had time to mature.
There were a lot of things that he would start and not complete. Part of this comes from having a lot on his plate. He would pick something up to try and fix it and then pick up something else because the first item was difficult or boring. For example, financial planners have a lot of paperwork to work through and file. This was a task that was a challenge for Andrew to complete each week because it didnât make him money. It is a sunk cost that comes with the business.
There were a bunch of random tasks that all took time and added to the complexity of change.
